Why Do Latinas Get Spray Tans? Breaking the Myth That We're "Already Dark Enough"

“But you’re already tan”

“Why would you get a spray tan?”

“You’re already dark enough”

If you're Latina, there's a good chance you've heard one or maybe all of these comments. As a Latina spray tan artist and educator, I've heard them countless times. Not only from people outside our community, but sometimes from other Latinas, too. The assumption is always the same: If you naturally have melanin, olive skin, or tan easily, then a spray tan must not be for you. It's one of the biggest misconceptions in the beauty industry and it's exactly why I wanted to write this article. Not because I want to convince every Latina to get a spray tan, but because I want to educate the beauty industry and even our own community that spray tanning has never been about changing who you are. It's about enhancing what already makes you beautiful.

For years, spray tanning has been marketed almost exclusively toward women with fair skin. The advertisements often featured beach vacations, before-and-after transformations, and the promise of looking "bronzed." As a result, many Latinas grew up believing spray tanning simply wasn't meant for us. If you already had color, why would you need more? But that question is based on the assumption that spray tanning is only about becoming darker. It isn't. A professionally customized spray tan is about creating balance, evening your complexion and enhancing your natural undertones. It's about creating a healthy-looking glow without exposing your skin to harmful UV rays. Just like makeup artists don't apply the same foundation shade to every client, professional spray tan artists shouldn't apply the same solution to every body.

WHY I STARTED DIOSA SPRAY TANS

When I founded Diosa Spray Tans, I wasn't just opening another spray tan studio. I was creating the studio I wished existed when I first started getting my own spray tans done. A place where Latina women and women of color wouldn't have to wonder if their artist understood their skin. A place where caramel, golden, neutral, and deeper skin tones weren't grouped into one generic category. Because here's the truth: there is no such thing as one Latina skin tone. Our community is beautifully diverse. Some of us have fair olive skin. Some of us have warm golden undertones. Some have neutral complexions. Others have rich caramel or deep brown skin. Some tan immediately in the sun and others burn. Yet despite all of that diversity, the beauty industry has often spoken about Latinas as though we all look exactly the same. We don't. And neither should our spray tans.

When someone books a spray tan at my studio, they're not asking me to make them look like someone else. They're asking me to help them feel confident Maybe they're getting married, taking photos, going on vacation or they simply want to feel good in their own skin. Those are the same reasons people get their hair done, book a facial, whiten their teeth, manicure or even get their makeup professionally. None of those services are about changing who you are, they're about highlighting your best features, and a spray tan is no different.

Somewhere along the way, society turned spray tanning into a stereotype. People imagine someone trying to become dramatically darker or they picture the orange spray tans of the early 2000s. Professional spray tanning has evolved tremendously. Today's custom spray tan is a personalized beauty service designed to complement your natural complexion. The goal isn't for someone to notice your tan. The goal is for someone to say:

"You look amazing."

"Your skin is glowing."

"Did you just get back from vacation?"

The best spray tan is one that looks like your skin on its very best day.

This blog isn't just about spray tans. It's about representation. It's about challenging outdated beauty standards. It's about helping Latina women feel seen in an industry that hasn't always represented them. And it's about reminding every woman that confidence doesn't belong to one skin tone. Neither does beauty. Whether your complexion is fair, olive, golden, caramel, or deep brown, you deserve beauty services that are customized for you and not based on assumptions. At Diosa Spray Tans, that's exactly what we believe because spray tanning isn't about becoming darker. It's about becoming more confident in the skin you're already in.

WHY DO LATINAS GET SPRAY TANS? IT’S PROBABLY NOT THE REASON YOU THINK.

One of the biggest misconceptions about spray tanning is that people get them because they want to look dramatically darker. While that may be someone's personal preference and there's nothing wrong with that, for most of our Latina clients, that's not the goal at all. In fact, one of the first questions I ask every client during their consultation isn't, "How dark do you want to be?"

It's:

"How do you want to feel when you look in the mirror?"

The answer is almost always the same.

"I want to look healthy."

"I want my skin to look even."

"I want to glow."

"I want to feel confident."

"I want to look good in pictures."

Notice what isn't on that list.

"I want to look like a different person."

Because that's never what a great spray tan should do.

Every Latina's Skin Is Different

One of the reasons I became so passionate about custom spray tanning is because I realized how often women of color were treated like an afterthought in the beauty industry. Many spray tan studios still rely on a "light, medium, or dark" approach. But our skin isn't that simple. Latinas come from countries all over Latin America, each with unique histories, cultures, and ancestries. Our complexions range from porcelain with olive undertones to rich, deep brown skin and everything in between. Even within the same family, siblings can have completely different skin tones and undertones. That's why I don't believe in one-size-fits-all spray tans. A beautiful spray tan starts with understanding your skin, not making assumptions about it.

Before every appointment, I consider factors like:

  • Your natural skin tone/type

  • Your undertones (olive, golden, neutral, warm, or cool)

  • Your lifestyle and activity level

  • The event you're preparing for

  • Your desired finish

Those details make the difference between a tan that looks obvious and one that simply makes people say,

"Your skin looks incredible."

Spray Tans Create Balance; Not a New Identity

Think about your favorite makeup products. A good foundation doesn't make you look like someone else, it evens your complexion and a little concealer doesn't erase who you are, tt softens areas you'd like to brighten. The same is true for a professional spray tan. It's not about hiding your natural skin tone it's about creating harmony.

Many Latina clients choose a spray tan because it can help soften the appearance of:

  • Uneven pigmentation

  • Acne marks

  • Stretch marks

  • Surgical scars

  • Tan lines

  • Lighter knees and elbows

  • Areas where the skin naturally has more or less pigment

A spray tan doesn't erase these things, nor should it. Instead, it creates a more balanced overall complexion that often allows clients to feel comfortable wearing less makeup, showing more skin, or stepping in front of a camera with confidence.

The Camera Sees Things Differently Than We Do

If you've ever looked amazing in the mirror but felt disappointed by your photos, you're not imagining it. Professional lighting, camera flashes, and editing styles can completely change how skin appears. Bright lighting often washes out warmth; flash photography can make the skin look flat and cool-toned editing can reduce the richness of naturally warm complexions. That's one reason celebrities, models, fitness competitors, brides, and content creators often schedule spray tans before major events. They're not trying to become someone else; they're preparing for the way cameras capture skin. At Diosa Spray Tans, I even ask clients who their photographer is before certain appointments because every photographer has a different editing style. Some edit cool and others edit warm. Some emphasize contrast and others create a soft, airy look. Understanding those details allows me to customize the spray tan, so it complements the final images.

YES, MANY CELEBRITIES WITH MELANIN ALSO GET SPRAY TANS

Another myth is that spray tanning is only for celebrities with fair skin. The reality is that many well-known women across a variety of skin tones incorporate professional spray tanning into their beauty routines before red carpets, concerts, award shows, magazine covers, campaigns, and photoshoots. Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B, and Karol G have all been publicly associated with professional spray tanning or working with celebrity spray tan artists as part of their glam teams. Their makeup artists, hairstylists, and stylists understand something the average person may not think about: Skin is part of the overall look. A customized spray tan can help create a more even complexion, add warmth under studio lighting, and enhance the final result without looking obvious. If some of the most photographed women in the world trust professional spray tanning, it reinforces an important point: Spray tanning isn't reserved for one ethnicity, one complexion, or one beauty standard. It's simply another beauty service like professional makeup, hair coloring, skincare, or manicures that helps people feel polished and confident. One of my favorite moments is handing a client the mirror after their appointment.

Most don't say,

"Wow, I look darker."

Instead, they smile and say things like:

"My skin looks so healthy."

"I look so glowy."

"I finally feel vacation ready."

"I can't wait to take pictures."

"I just feel like the best version of myself."

That's the feeling we're creating.

“YOU’RE ALREADY DARK ENOUGH”: CHALLENGING COLORISM, NOT CELEBRATING IT

The phrase "You're already dark enough" is one that many Latinas have heard at some point in their lives. Sometimes it's said by a family member. Sometimes it's said by a friend. Sometimes it's said by someone who genuinely believes they're giving a compliment, but regardless of the intention, it's a phrase worth examining. When someone questions why a Latina would get a spray tan simply because she already has melanin, it reveals a larger misunderstanding not only about spray tanning, but about beauty itself.

The Difference Between Skin Color and Skin Confidence

Let's make one thing clear: A spray tan does not change your ethnicity, i does not erase your natural complexion and it certainly doesn't make someone "more Latina." Just like getting your hair highlighted doesn't change your identity, or wearing makeup doesn't make you a different person, a professional spray tan is simply another beauty service designed to enhance what you already have. At Diosa Spray Tans, our goal has never been to make every client darker. Our goal is to help every client feel more confident in their own skin. Sometimes that means adding a subtle warmth before a vacation. Sometimes it means evening out pigmentation before a wedding. Sometimes it means creating a healthy glow for a branding photoshoot. The goal is always enhancement not transformation.

Understanding Colorism Within Our Community

This conversation also opens the door to something many families don't often talk about: colorism. Colorism is different from racism. While racism is discrimination based on race, colorism is the preference or bias toward lighter or darker skin tones within the same racial or ethnic community.

Many Latinas grew up hearing comments like:

"Don't stay in the sun too long, you'll get too dark."

"You're lucky you got your mom's lighter skin."

"She has the prettier complexion."

Or on the opposite end:

"You're already dark enough."

These comments are often passed down through generations without harmful intent, but over time they can shape how we see ourselves and others. Beauty should never be measured by how light or how dark someone is. Every complexion deserves to be celebrated.

There Is No "Right" Shade of Latina

One of the most beautiful things about the Latina community is our diversity. We come from different countries, cultures, and family histories. Some of us have fair olive skin. Some have warm golden undertones. Some have freckles, some have rich caramel skin and others have deep brown complexions. Every one of those shades is beautiful and none of them determine whether someone "needs" or "doesn't need" a spray tan.

The question shouldn't be:

"Why would a Latina get a spray tan?"

The better question is:

"What look is she trying to achieve?"

Because every client has a different answer.

Representation in the Beauty Industry Matters

For years, many beauty campaigns unintentionally sent the message that spray tanning was only for women with fair skin. If every advertisement only shows one type of client, it's easy to assume the service isn't meant for anyone else. That's one reason representation is so important. When Latina women see artists who understand olive skin, golden undertones, and melanin-rich complexions, they realize they don't have to settle for a one-size-fits-all experience. They deserve personalized services. They deserve artists who understand their skin. They deserve to see themselves reflected in the beauty industry.

Let's Change the Conversation

Instead of asking,

"Why would a Latina get a spray tan?"

Maybe it's time we ask,

"Why have we assumed she shouldn't?"

Spray tanning isn't reserved for one skin tone. It isn't reserved for one ethnicity. It isn't about becoming darker. It's about choosing a beauty service that makes you feel confident, radiant, and like the best version of yourself and that's something every woman deserves. At Diosa Spray Tans, we're proud to be part of changing that conversation, one customized glow at a time.
